Am Eröffnungstag der Eiskunstlauf-WM in Saitama (Japan) übernahmen, zur Freude der Gastgeber, die Japaner Riku Miura und Ryuichi Kihara die Führung nach dem Kurzprogram. Ihr emotionales Kurzprogramm zum Song „You’ll never walk alone“ belohnte die Jury mit 80,72 Punkten.
Zweite wurden die Titelverteidiger Alexa Knierim/Brandon Frazier aus den USA vor den Europameistern Sara Conti/Niccolo Macii aus Italien.
Für das deutsche Paar Annika Hocke und Robert Kunkel verlief der Start in die Eiskunstlauf-WM nach Verletzungsproblemen enttäuschend. Die Hoffnung auf einen Spitzenplatz waren schon nach dem Kurzprogramm beendet. „Ich hatte in der Vorbereitung ziemliche Rückenprobleme. Wir sind froh, überhaupt hier zu sein“, sagte Hocke nach dem Erreichen des 15. Platzes mit 60,89 Punkten.
Die Entscheidung über den WM-Titel im Paarlauf fand in der Kür statt. Der Sieg ging an Miura und Kihara.
