Ajax Amsterdam vs. Chelsea London – Prediction (23.10.2019)

Preview and Teams Comparison.

Ajax and Chelsea have never previously met in European competition, with the Blues the ninth different English team Ajax have faced in UEFA European competition. Ajax have won one of their four home Champions League games against English teams (W1 D1 L2), winning 3-1 against Man City in October 2012 – in their most recent game, they surrendered a 2-0 lead and lost 3-2 against Spurs in last season’s semi-final. Chelsea are unbeaten in four previous European games with Dutch sides (W2 D2 L0), winning twice against Feyenoord in the 1999-00 Champions League and drawing two knockout games goalless against AFC DWS in the 1968-69 Fairs Cup, going out after losing a coin toss.

Including qualifiers, Ajax are unbeaten in this season’s UEFA Champions League (UCL) campaign (W4, D2), winning both of their group stage games to date by a 3-0 scoreline. The Dutch champions have done so as part of a riotous sequence, which has seen them win their last six halves of UCL football with a clean sheet. Quincy Promes has scored a first-half goal in both of Ajax’s UCL group stage games this term. Across all competitions, Ajax remain unbeaten this season (W13, D4). Three of their last four competitive wins have seen them score exactly twice in one half, with the two goals in question separated by no more than 30 minutes each time.

None of Ajax’s last three UCL home games (P3, W3 – GF 8, GA 2) have seen them score before the 15-minute mark. Four of Chelsea’s last five PL/UCL games have seen one half produce an even number of total goals. Ajax have scored first in their last five competitive home games, though only two (40%) of those games saw them do so inside the first 30 minutes.

In terms of Premier League (PL) and UCL form alone, Chelsea have been invincible since their last defeat (P4, W4), with those four games seeing them score exactly once (and score the last goal) beyond the 70th minute. The last three of that quartet also saw Chelsea win the second half 1-0. Three of Chelsea’s last four away games have seen Tammy Abraham opening the scoring inside the first half-hour. Despite their recent surge, a competitive clean sheet on the road remains elusive for Chelsea this season. Impressively though, Frank Lampard’s men have won their last four competitive away games (all producing over 2.5 total goals), with Chelsea scoring once beyond the 75th minute in the last three of those road trips.
