Reilly Opelka returned to compete on the Challenger circuits in the final few weeks of the 2018 season, but he will now make his debut in ATP Basel. He has played ten matches on the surface so far in 2019 and managed to win eight of those matches — champion in New York and a semifinalist in Dallas Challenger.

Christian Garin still remains winless on indoor hardcourt (in career) as he lost to the eventual semifinalist Andreas Seppi in the first round of ATP Moscow last week, despite winning the first set. It was his first outing on the surface in 2019 and fourth in career. World #38 Christian Garin, who won three consecutive Challenger titles in Campinas, Santo Domingo, and Lima in his last three events of the 2018 season, will make his debut in ATP Basel this week. Their H2H is tied at 1-1, but this will be their first meeting on a non-clay surface, which gives Reilly Opelka an excellent opportunity to open up a 2-1 lead in the series.
