Christian Garin defeated fellow South American Pablo Cuevas in straight sets to reach the second round of Shanghai Masters on his debut appearance, 6-1 6-4. It was a solid result for the Chilean considering he retired from his previous match in Beijing last week.
The 23-year-old Chilean has also won two ATP World Tour titles so far in 2019 and made this the best season of his career. Garin’s only previous second-round match in Masters 1000 events came in Montreal recently, where he upset John Isner in straight sets.

Christian Garin prevailed in three sets when the pair met once in the championship match in Munich earlier this season. However, playing on hardcourt does give Matteo Berrettini the upper hand in this clash.
