Daniil Medvedev vs. Alexander Zverev – Prediction (ATP London – 15.11.2019)

Medvedev (Rus) – Zverev (Ger). Preview and players comparison.

Daniil Medvedev suffered third defeat in a row when he lost a healthy lead against world #1 Rafael Nadal in his second round-robin match earlier this week. The Russian won the first set in a tiebreaker and later raced to a 5-1 lead in the deciding set but still ended up on the losing side, 7-6 3-6 6-7. Daniil Medvedev did not do any favor to his chances of qualifying for the semifinal after blowing away a great chance against Rafael Nadal, but he can still progress to the next stage of ATP World Tour Finals. For the Russian to be alive in this tournament on Saturday, he will have to beat Alexander Zverev in straight sets and hope his rival Stefanos Tsitsipas beat Rafael Nadal in the other round-robin match earlier in the day.

“I played much better [than in my first match]… Still was far from what I want, but I played much better. [I] still have one match to go. Not sure if it’s going to mean anything in terms of going to [the] semis, but just going to try to play even better,” said Daniil Medvedev.

This has turned out to be a terrible debut campaign for world #4 Daniil Medvedev, especially considering he played some scintillating tennis and delivered consistent results in the second half of 2019 season and was even considered as one of the favorites to lift the title in London this week.

Alexander Zverev impressed against Rafael Nadal earlier this week (won 6-2 6-4) but could win only five games against his young rival Stefanos Tsitsipas on Wednesday, 3-6 2-6. However, the German still has got the control on his own hands as a win against Daniil Medvedev would send him to the semifinal of ATP World Tour Finals, regardless of what happens in the other round-robin match between Rafael Nadal and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

“There are a lot of things that I did not do great [against Tsitsipas], and I have to change that to have a chance on Friday. But things are still in my hands, and I’m looking forward to it, because I can still decide whether I’m here on Saturday or not,” said Alexander Zverev.

The last time a defending champion of ATP World Tour Finals qualified for the event in the following season but failed to reach the semifinal was back in 2009 when Novak Djokovic won two of his three round-robin matches but still exited the group stage. The result of the other round-robin match between Nadal and Tsitsipas will change the magnitude of this match as a Spaniard win will kill the Russian’s chances of qualifying further.
