Rangers only need to avoid defeat to progress into the UEFA Europa League (UEL) knockout stages, and with a seven-game winning streak at home in all competitions behind them, which includes two UEL wins ‘to nil’, the Glaswegian outfit look well placed to better the 2-1 defeat they suffered in the reverse fixture. The hosts’ 1-0 League Cup Final defeat at the weekend not only ended a run of 14 fixtures that had seen at least two match goals, but also ended a 15-game streak where there had been at least one goal before half-time. Furthermore, with four of Rangers’ last five home wins coming by at least a two-goal margin, as well as four of their six UEL home games this season, their favourites tag looks justified.

Only a win will guarantee Young Boys a route through to the knockouts but they remain winless on the road this group stage campaign after conceding the opener by the 20th minute in both games (D1, L1). Whilst they’ve conceded just 1.2 goals per UEL fixture this term, they have worryingly shipped three goals in three of their last four competitive away games (W1, D1, L2). The visitors away record in the UEL proper provides no encouragement either (W2, D6, L11), although when they do perform they are entertaining – six of Young Boys’ last eight competitive victories saw them score precisely four goals.

Players to watch: Alfredo Morelos has scored in four UEL group stage games, netting Rangers’ first goal each time. Although Christian Fassnacht (YB) scored an injury-time winner in the reverse, four of his five competitive goals since came before half-time.

Stat attack: Rangers have conceded the opener just once across their last 14 UEL home games. Both teams have scored in Young Boys’ last six UEL away games. Young Boys’ last four UEL fixtures produced at least five yellow cards.
