World #7 Stefanos Tsitsipas failed against the big-serving Kevin Anderson in straight sets in the round of 16 in Shanghai Masters last year and would be hoping to progress at least one step further this time around. Stefanos Tsitsipas was close to winning the fourth ATP World Tour title of his career (and third of the season) in Beijing last week as he led the championship match by a set and break against Dominic Thiem but ended up losing it in three sets, 6-3 4-6 1-6. It was still a successful campaign considering he was winless in five matches on the main tour before entering Beijing and was even forced to retire from his opening round match against Adrian Mannarino in Zhuhai.

Hubert Hurkacz avenged his 4-6 0-6 loss to Gael Monfils in Montreal Masters a couple of months ago with a solid straight-set win over the Frenchman in the second round of Shanghai Masters on Wednesday, 6-2 7-6. The 22-year-old Pole’s debut campaign here in 2018 ended in the first round, and he was winless in three matches on the main tour before entering Shanghai Masters earlier this week, but he is now a win away from making his second quarterfinal appearance in a Masters 1000 event — quarterfinalist in Indian Wells 2019.
