After delivering a solid straight-set win over Casper Ruud earlier this week, Miomir Kecmanovic put in a strong fight against the top seed Alex de Minaur in the second round-robin match on Wednesday, but it was not enough to get the win, 1-4 3-4 4-1 0-4. However, Miomir Kecmanovic still has a good chance of qualifying for the semifinal of ATP Next Gen Finals on his debut appearance. A defeat for Casper Ruud in the first round-robin match on Thursday will secure the Serbian’s progression, and even if Alex de Minaur suffers an upset, Miomir Kecmanovic can write his own fate when he steps on the court to face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Prior to entering the ATP Next Gen Finals, Miomir Kecmanovic competed in five indoor hardcourt tournaments (at all levels) this year, and he couldn’t win more than one match in any of them (3/6 on IH in 2019).

The Spaniard has done well in both of his matches this week against Alex de Minaur and Casper Ruud but is yet to open his account. Despite losing both of his matches and sitting at the bottom of Group A, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina can still qualify for the semifinal if he beats Miomir Kecmanovic in three or four sets and the result of the other Group A match between Alex de Minaur and Casper Ruud goes in his favor. The talented Spaniard’s fitness struggles make Miomir Kecmanovic the favorite to win here and extend his lead in the H2H series (1-0 Ningbo Challenger 2018), despite winning only five of his previous 15 matches on tour.
