Novak Djokovic vs. Dominic Thiem – Prediction (ATP London – 12.11.2019)

Djokovic – Thiem. Preview and players comparison.

Novak Djokovic holds a dominant 7-3 lead in the H2H series including winning the pair’s only previous meeting on indoor hard court, which came here in London three years ago. Though Thiem has played some solid tennis in the second half of 2019, Djokovic is easily the better player on indoor hardcourt, and he is favored to further extend his lead in the H2H series.

Novak Djokovic made a flying start to his 12th ATP World Tour Finals campaign with a dominant straight-set win over debutant Matteo Berrettini on Sunday. It was a solid performance from the Serbian as he dropped only ten points on his serve and broke the Italian’s serve five times in the match, 6-2 6-1. With this win, Novak Djokovic extended his winning run on the main tour to six matches, and notably, all those six wins have come on indoor hardcourt (champion in Paris Masters last month) and in straight sets. World #2 Novak Djokovic won the ATP World Tour Finals for four consecutive seasons between 2012-2015, and in fact, he has reached the finals of this tournament in his previous six appearances. The last time he suffered a group stage exit in the year-end championships was back in 2011 when he lost his second and third round-robin matches against David Ferrer and Janko Tipsarevic.

Despite winning his fifth title of the season in Paris Masters a couple of weeks ago, Novak Djokovic lost his position at the top of ATP World Rankings, but Rafael Nadal’s defeat against Alexander Zverev on Monday has boosted the Serbian’s chances of finishing the season as the year-end #1. Novak Djokovic heads into this clash with an eight-match winning streak in the group stages of ATP World Tour Finals. The last time he lost a round-robin match in this tournament was against Roger Federer in 2015 (second round-robin match).

Dominic Thiem came into this campaign with a lot of confidence and momentum on his side, and he made the most of it to register an impressive win over the six-times champion Roger Federer earlier this week, 7-5 7-5.It was only the world #5 Dominic Thiem’s fourth win in ATP World Tour Finals, and this win has given him an excellent opportunity to reach the semifinal of this tournament for the first time in four appearances. Dominic Thiem is one of the two players to have scored at least one win against each of the Big Three players this year. However, his wins against Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic came on clay, and he will have to raise his game significantly to stand a chance against the Serbian in these conditions.

“I think he’s [Djokovic] the best right now. He proved that also in Bercy where he didn’t somehow play his best tennis, but still won the title pretty easy, so that’s how good his level is. I will watch that match in Roland Garros a little bit, because it was very good, of course. Was also, most of the time, the right tactics I played. Of course it’s not the same here. Was clay outdoor back then and now indoor. But some things I can use, for sure, in the match on Tuesday,” said Thiem ahead of this big clash.
