Olympiacos Piraeus vs. Bayern Munich – Prediction (22.10.2019)

Olympiakos have lost all four of their European meetings against Bayern Munich, losing twice in the 1980-81 European Cup and twice in the 2015-16 Champions League.

A 3-1 defeat to Red Star Belgrade in Olympiakos’ last Champions League (CL) outing saw the Greeks forfeit a 1-0 half-time lead, but also made it three CL games in a row where both teams scored. However, that game is their only loss in their last 23 fixtures (W19, D3 L1 – in all competitions). El Arabi Hilal Soudani (OLY) netted a brace last time out – three of his four goals this term have come after half-time. Yet whilst the hosts are unbeaten in ten European home games (W7, D3), that looks unlikely to continue here considering the 44-time Greek champions have lost their last five games against Bundesliga opponents (GF 1, GA 11). However an average of 2.75 goals scored per competitive home match this term does show they have the firepower to threaten.

Olympiakos’ last five CL defeats have come by a two-goal margin. Bayern have been winning at half-time in their last four competitive away wins. There’s been over 3.5 goals in four of Bayern’s last six CL matches (over 5.5 in three).

Whilst Bayern Munich have stalled domestically with one point from their last two Bundesliga matches, with both games adding to a run of four straight competitive fixtures where both teams scored, their CL campaign has seen two emphatic victories by at least a three-goal margin. Robert Lewandowski has been Bayern’s first goalscorer in seven of the 11 competitive games he’s found the net this season. In fact the visitors’ 7-2 away victory over Tottenham in their previous CL match – the 19th time they’ve scored 5+ goals in this competition – saw three goals after the 75th minute. As such, there’s now been at least one goal during that time period in Bayern’s last three away games, as well as their last three CL victories.
