Roger Federer has got a terrific record in Basel as well as on indoor hard court, and he should able to get his third win in three matches against the struggling Peter Gojowczyk.

Top seed and home-crowd favorite Roger Federer will kickstart his 18th ATP Basel campaign on Monday, which will also be his first outing on indoor hardcourt this season (on the main tour). He played two singles matches on the surface in the Laver Cup last month and managed to win both of those matches against John Isner and Nick Kyrgios. Roger Federer is a nine-time champion of ATP Basel and is currently on a 20-match winning streak in this tournament. His most recent defeat in this event came against Juan Martin Del Potro in the final of 2013 edition, and his only ever first-round loss here in Basel came during his debut campaign way back in 1998 (against Andre Agassi).

World #3 Roger Federer hasn’t looked entirely convincing with his performance since suffering one of the toughest defeat of his career against Novak Djokovic in the title-deciding clash in Wimbledon a few months ago. Since that defeat, Federer has entered three events and couldn’t progress beyond the quarterfinal in any of them. Despite performing well below his standards in these ten months, 2019 has been a reasonably successful season for the Swiss as he has bagged 51 wins at the expense of eight losses, which earned him three titles on the main tour in Halle, Miami, and Dubai. The last time Roger Federer finished a season without winning an indoor hardcourt title was in 2013 when he had a tough time on tour and suffered 17 defeats — most defeat in a season since 2002 (58/22).

Peter Gojowczyk was winless in nine matches on the main tour before entering ATP Basel, but he managed to deliver two dominant straight-set wins over Ivo Karlovic and top seed Casper Ruud in the qualifying stages over the weekend. After two failed attempts (in 2008 and 2017), the German finally managed to make his mark in the main draw of this tournament in 2018 by defeating Nicolas Jarry in the first round.
