Stefanos Tsitsipas vs. Roger Federer – Prediction (ATP London – 16.11.2019)

Tsitsipas (Gre) – Federer (Sui). Preview and players comparison.

Though Stefanos Tsitsipas has got the ability and mental strength to challenge the Big Three players consistently, Roger Federer having an additional day of rest while the Greek was spending a lot of effort on the court less than 24 hours ago could prove to be the decisive factor here.

The effort and fight Stefanos Tsitsipas put in the deciding set against Rafael Nadal on Friday was admirable, but he may live to regret his decision not to conserve energy as it could hurt his chances against Roger Federer, who has had an additional day of rest. Stefanos Tsitsipas’ hopes of becoming the only undefeated semifinalist of this edition of ATP World Tour finals ended in the hands of Rafael Nadal on Friday. In a hard-fought contest that was concluded in three sets and nearly three hours, Tsitsipas did not create even a single break point chance, 6-7 6-4 7-5.

“My body feels well currently. I don’t feel pain anywhere. I feel fresh, honestly. After having a long, difficult match like this, I feel like I can go out and play tomorrow the same way. So I don’t have any problem with that,” Stefanos Tsitsipas denied fatigue concerns after a grueling battle with Rafael Nadal.

World #6 Stefanos Tsitsipas’ most recent semifinal match on the main tour came on the indoor hardcourt of ATP Basel, where he lost to none other than Roger Federer in straight sets, 4-6 4-6. Overall, he has played ten semifinal matches so far in 2019 and lost five of them, including the recent two in Basel and Shanghai Masters. Stefanos Tsitsipas, who became the youngest player to reach the semifinal of a slam since Novak Djokovic in 2007 at the Australian Open earlier this season, has now become the youngest semifinalist of the ATP World Tour Finals since Juan Martin Del Potro in 2009 (defeated Robin Soderling in three sets).

“I’m happy to stick around. Hopefully [I can] go a step further than I did last year. I played a good match against Zverev last year, but he was unreal last year, so that was tough,” Roger Federer hopes to avoid yet another semifinal defeat in London.

Roger Federer avenged his 2019 Wimbledon finals loss to Novak Djokovic with a dominant win in a must-win round-robin match on Thursday. It was a flawless performance from the swiss as he hit 24 winners, won over 80% of his first-serve points, and held all his service games with ease, 6-4 6-3. Last year as well, world #3 Roger Federer managed to qualify for the semifinal of the ATP World Tour Finals after losing his first round-robin match but was beaten by a Next Gen Star in the semifinal, 5-7 6-7 against the eventual champion Alexander Zverev. Roger Federer is a record six-times champion of ATP World Tour Finals, but he has also suffered five semifinal defeats here, including losing the recent two such matches to David Goffin in 2017 and Alexander Zverev in 2018.
