Tottenham vs. Southampton – Score prediction (28.09.2019)

Overview.

After failing to convert a third straight Premier League (PL) half-time lead away from home into victory (for the first time in 11 years), Tottenham return home to build upon a PL record at their new stadium. Their equal-worst start to a season this decade continued with defeat at Leicester (2-1), after which no result (win-draw-loss) has yet been repeated in consecutive weeks. Back-to-back home wins have eluded them so far in 2019/20 – as they did on all but one occasion in their final quarter of last PL season. They do, however, have three straight PL home victories against Southampton to look upon for inspiration.

Southampton carried one of the poorest win (17.65%) and win/draw (41.18%) success rates when classified as an outsider in away PL trips last season, but have since begun a dramatic turnaround with two upset victories at Brighton (0-2) and Sheffield United (0-1). The ‘Saints’ have now scored in five consecutive PL games – a feat they didn’t manage last season until early February – whilst, similarly to their hosts, they have had to scrap from just two opening goals and no half-time leads for their seven 2019/20 points.
